BACHOK: A boy who spent six years in the intensive care unit of the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM) due to bronco-pneumonia and breathing difficulties was allowed to go home to his family yesterday.

Muhamad Hanif Hashim, who was diagnosed with the illness when he was 15 days old, returned to his house in Kampung Wakaf Aik although he still needs to use a breathing aid.

“We hope that with good care and with the training provided by the hospital, he can have a safe life,” said HUSM director Dr Saidon Kamari in his speech at a ceremony to hand over the boy to his family and to set up the Help Hanif Fund. His speech was read by the hospital’s pharmacy director Noranini Abu Samah.

Muhamad Hanif was first treated at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital before being referred to HUSM.

Dr Saidon said training was provided to his family on how to care for him and on how to use the breathing aid.

“If the (breathing) aid is spoilt for even five minutes, he could die,” he said. – Bernama

Ketika terbaca kisah ini, teringat balik pengalaman semasa Doctor Youth Programme di USM, 25 dan 26 Jun 2006. Teringat pengalaman semasa berada di sana. Semua peserta dibahagikan kepada empat posting. Tiba-tiba teringat pulak, wad mana aku pergi dulu ya? Bila belek balik buku catatan time program tu, second posting kat wad ICU – Wad 1 Mutiara.

Bila amati balik buku tu, terpandang satu nama yang sama dengan nama dalam berita di atas. Ya, adik Haniff Hashim. Pesakit yang sama. Memang time tu, bila tengok keadaan adik Haniff memang menyedihkan. Saluran pernafasan adik Haniff memang tak lepas daripada alat ventilator. Even untuk makan (minum susu) pun, agak sukar sekali. Lebih mendebarkan time tu, alat ventilator adik Haniff hampir tercabut. Nasib baik nurse cepat bertindak. Merujuk kepada tag adik Haniff, dia telah dimasukkan ke situ sejak 30 Jun 2006 lagi. Akhirnya adik Haniff dibenarkan pulang juga. Harap keadaan adik Haniff bertambah baik. AMIN.
